ReceiptCSV

3 free receipts a day · no signup · files never leave your browser

A photo of a receipt, opened as a real Excel file

Drop a JPG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, or WebP. On-device OCR reads it in the browser, and the download is a native .xlsx — amounts as numbers, the date as a date cell, filters on — not a picture pasted into a sheet.

  • Private by design
  • Lines checked against the total
  • CSV and real .xlsx
  • Batch up to 25 receipts

Read inside your browser. Files are never uploaded or stored.

No receipt handy? Run a sample — always free, never uses a conversion.

Built for receipts. Not invoices.

Store, restaurant, gas, taxi, hotel and online-order receipts — the things you paid for. If a document asks you to pay by a due date, it's an invoice and belongs in a different tool.

How to get a usable workbook from a phone picture

  1. 1

    Photograph the whole receipt, flat

Fill the frame, avoid glare, and keep the paper flat. The Take a photo button on a phone opens the rear camera. A picture already in your library works too.

  2. 2

Wait for OCR, then read the warning if there is one

The English OCR model runs locally. If confidence is under 70%, the preview says so and asks you to check amounts against the photo. That warning is the feature — thermal paper fades.

  3. 3

Prefer the PDF when the register can email one

A text-layer PDF does not go through OCR, so digits are exact. Use the photo path for paper you can’t get any other way.

  4. 4

Download .xlsx, or CSV if Excel isn’t where it needs to go

Excel 2010 and newer, Excel for the web, Numbers, and LibreOffice open the workbook. Google Sheets imports either file. There is no “save to OneDrive” step.

Example from the bundled Bluebird Coffee photo sample: total 13.04, tax 1.04, tip 2.00, paid with Apple Pay. In the .xlsx these amounts are numeric cells formatted to two decimals, and the date is a real date (yyyy-mm-dd), not text. Quantity and unit price are included when the photo prints them.

The details

What the workbook contains

One sheet named Receipts. Header filters are on. Money columns — unit price, amount, subtotal, tax, tip, total — use a two-decimal number format, so SUM works without converting text. The date column is an Excel date. Descriptions are wide enough to read a line item without opening the cell.

HEIC, and the first-photo download

iPhone HEIC/HEIF is converted in the browser before OCR. If a particular HEIC fails, export a JPG or set the camera to Most Compatible. The first photo also downloads the OCR engine, about 6 MB, from this site. It is cached after that. The receipt itself is not uploaded. More on the camera flow is on receipt scanner, no app.

Honest limits of a picture

OCR is English. Faded, crumpled, or angled thermal paper is weaker than a flat, well-lit receipt. A photo with no readable total is rejected and does not use a conversion. Several photos can share one workbook — up to 25 files — with a source_file column. A PDF receipt is still the accurate path.

After Excel opens

Filter to a merchant, or add a category column the photo never had. The file is yours. ReceiptCSV does not store the workbook and does not sync it to a drive. If you only needed CSV, the CSV download is the same rows with a UTF-8 byte-order mark so Excel opens € and accented names correctly.
