On a phone, Take a photo uses the rear camera. You can also pick a picture already in your library. Desktop users drop the file on the box above.
The first photo downloads the English OCR engine (about 6 MB) from this site and caches it. Later receipts skip that download. The image is not sent to a cloud OCR service.
Sharp, flat, well-lit receipts do well. Crumpled or faded thermal paper does not. If confidence is low, the preview warns you. If no total can be read, the file is rejected and does not use a conversion.
You get the same columns as a PDF receipt: merchant, date, line items, tax, tip, total, payment method. A PDF is still the more accurate input when you have one.

Free use is three successful receipts a day in this browser. A paid pack is saved in the same browser after Stripe checkout. There is no email login for the scanner. If you clear cookies, the purchase goes with them — the contact page is how you sort that out with your Stripe receipt. Plans are on pricing.
JPG, PNG, HEIC, HEIF, and WebP, up to 20 MB. HEIC from an iPhone is converted in the browser; if one fails, share it as a JPG. The drop zone lists PDF, JPG, PNG, and HEIC; WebP is accepted too. A scanned PDF with no text layer is OCR’d for up to three pages. A normal e-receipt PDF is read as text, up to six pages, and skips OCR.
The on-device model is English. A sharp English receipt is the realistic photo case. German or French thermal paper is weaker through OCR. A PDF that already contains the characters — like a European fuel receipt — is read as text, so dates and 1.234,56 amounts can still be normalized without the photo model.
Store and ride apps will email a PDF. That file has no glare and no 8-vs-B mistakes. Use photo to Excel when paper is all you have, and PDF to Excel when you can download the receipt instead.
